Mauritius, or le Maurice as it is known locally, has a colourful history. Originally occupied by the Portuguese in 1507, then the Dutch, the French and the British, the island gained its independence in 1968. Mauritius, once the home of the now extinct Dodo bird, has a cuisine that is based on a mixture of Indian, Creole, Chinese and European foods, but is also by nature of its location heavily dependent on seafood. The islands main crop of sugarcane is the basis of the locally produced rum. Here is an island paradise you will remember forever.
